New Santa Cruz 5010 Australia Bound

Posted by Chris Dalziel on

The Santa Cruz 5010 is a key player within Santa Cruz's comprehensive mountain bike lineup, the short - mid travel, 27.5" ripper. But with the rapidly evolving MTB scene manufacturers need to be on the pulse or you'll be forgotten about over night. As a result we've got the latest evolution of the Santa Cruz 5010. So what's new and what mountain bike riders is the new Santa Cruz 5010 suited to?

Suspension

The unmistakable new lower link driven VPP design now carries over to the 5010. This update produces a suspension curve that fluctuates less, giving MTB riders a more consistent and predictable suspension feel throughout it's travel. This consistency allows riders to attack the rough terrain with added confidence as the bike performs with certainty underneath them.

Geometry

So if Santa Cruz are selling this bike as the fun, playful, poppy bike for trail riders does it still get the longer, lower, slacker treatment like every other bike you can imagine that's been released in the last few years? Yes, and It may sound like a contradiction by doing so. The bike won't have the same snappy and agile feel of the old 5010 but it will attack rougher terrain with greater ease and give riders greater confidence at speed. And of course, the playful nature of the 5010 nature is still retained with some smart choices from Santa Cruz. This isn't their first rodeo.

The head angle sits at 65.7 degrees, adjustable to 65.4 while the bottom bracket is at 338mm, also adjustable to 334mm. This low bottom bracket height will let you lean the bike over in corners easily with a low centre of gravity. What appeals to us as the best update in geometry is Santa Cruz's decision to change the length of chain stays according to frame size from S - XL. Now riders of all sizes will have a more balanced bike allowing them to weight their tyres better and ride faster!
