The 2022 Pivot Firebird

Posted by Chris Dalziel on

Until earlier this month, Pivot's marketing team had been teasing the public with the release of "something exciting". Low and behold it was an update to their beloved Enduro weapon the Pivot Firebird! Now that we've had the chance to drool over one in the flesh, we're ready to tell you all about it.

Major updates

Along with the vibrant colours, the first thing you'll notice about the 2022 Firebird is the updated shock positioning. Pivot are sticking with the DW linkage but have opted to mount the shock vertically. You may have noticed this trend among Pivots other recently updated/new bike models. This change in shock position has provided the Firebird with an extra 3mm of rear travel and allowed space for a bottle cage. Coming into summer, I can hear already hear the SEQ riders rejoicing!

Travel and Suspension

Pivot have remained generous with the Firebird's travel. With 165mm in the rear and 170mm up front, there's no doubt that the bike was designed with speed front of mind. Riders now have the option to run a Fox DHX2 Coil shock and Fox Factory 38 from the box, providing that extra confidence to plow through rock gardens and technical sections. While the Firebird is undoubtedly a long travel Enduro race bike, the DW link manages to keep the suspension platform active and playful.

Taking a look at size and Geometry charts, there have been some notable changes too. Unlike many brands on the market, the rear triangle of the Firebird changes per size model, this allows the rider to feel more centred and balanced on the bike. The chainstay length across all sizes is relatively modest, while the reach would be considers on the long side. The seat tube length is short allowing the rider some extra freedom of movement. The angle of the seat tube has been steepened which will help move weight forward for better climbing efficiency. Overall, Pivot have chosen a more progressive geometry which will make the Firebird a better climber and more versatile bike.

Who's it for?
If you want a new bike to race the SEQ Enduro series or just something to ride recreationally on aggressive trails, this should be on your shortlist. While the Firebird isn't lacking in travel and is designed to be an extremely fast descender, it's still an efficient climber.
