Frame Construction / Design
The new Trail 429 looks more than a little different going to a vertically mounted trunnion shock and getting those smooth, straight lines we've been loving on the Switchblade. The frames will also look different from size to size as Pivot layup their tubing appropriate to size in order to get the best ride feel and weight out of each frame size. Larger bikes with thicker, stronger tubing and the smalls with thinner and lighter tubing. This kind of attention to detail is pretty impressive!
Suspension Design
More than just moving the shock to a vertical position Pivot have tweaked the feeling of the rear of the bike quite a lot. They've moved to a more progressive design which sits higher in it's travel. Sitting higher in the travel the bike has a more lively, snappy nature that's easier to pedal and throw around the trail. Pivot say the bike is not coil shock compatible with it's leverage curve however. Stick with that fun, poppy air shock feeling on this bike!
Geometry
The Trail 429 gets slacker, steeper and longer in all the right places. The head angle is at 66 degrees in the low setting (slackens out by 0.5 with a 140mm fork). The BB sits at 34.7cm and chain stays at 43cm for a composed ride with a low centre of gravity. The numbers aren't radically modern or extreme, just balanced and comfortable for general trail riding.
Who's It For
Who does the Pivot Trail 429 suit the best? It's a capable short to mid travel trail bike that fits well with our Australian trail network. Light and nimble enough to climb with confidence yet with enough suspension to navigate it's way down technical single track with a nimble yet stable nature. If you like to clock up those km's on the single track and enjoy the feeling of a zippy, poppy trail bike the Pivot Trail 429 should be on your radar.
