The NEW Santa Cruz Nomad

Posted by Chris Dalziel on

The Santa Cruz Nomad V4 with it's lower linkage driven VPP design burst onto the scene in stunning fashion. Previous Nomad's were all about the descent and still required blood, sweat and tears to climb but this one was different.. it could climb. So, a few years on how have Santa Cruz gone about improving their flagship 27.5" Enduro bike?

Geometry

Somewhat predictable but... they'd made it longer and slacker. How much so? depending on where you like your flip chip about a degree with the high setting now riding at 64 degrees or 63.7 degrees in low. The bike's reach also extends but, the seat tube angle has been steepened significantly to 77.5 degrees (low). This will give riders a far more comfortable and efficient pedalling position while having plenty of room to move and position your body on the descents for optimal weight distribution. Speaking of distribution, your weight will now be more balanced on the Nomad than most bikes on the market with size specific rear centre lengths. A great feature that we would love to see more manufacturers embrace.

Suspension

The lower link driven VPP design carries over and looks all too similar at a glance. However, refinements have been made to adapt to and embrace modern MTB trails and riding styles. The design has a straighter leverage curve for greater consistency and predictability for the rider as the bike moves through it's travel. Still offering 170mm front and rear there is more than enough suspension to tackle those nasty descents and come out the other end smiling.

Frame Design

The internal cable routing on the new Nomad is well thought out and looks easy on the eyes, the way a modern mountain bike's cables should be. What is of more interest is the addition of another support between the chain stay and seat stay to improve the ride quality of the frame!

Who's It For?

If you're a Brisbane mountain bike rider who loves getting amongst rough terrain or going large on the jumps with 170mm front and rear the Nomad is ready to eat it up. But... like to climb to the top chasing those descents? The Nomad already pedalled well and this new V5 model takes things a step further, it's a big travel all rounder like no other.
